Hello to a New Term!
Welcome to Reading Is Thinking
I are very happy with how our new term has started.
Reading
is Thinking is a provincial
pilot course available for pass/fail credit to students in grade nine, ten and
eleven. This course focuses on literacy
in all subject areas. Students receive
instruction in a variety of areas, including reading and writing strategies,
organization and time management, and technological literacy. Literacy skills gained in the course may be
applied to numerous subject areas such as; Social Studies, Math, Science and
English Language Arts. This course is
designed to encourage literacy in all learners, and is recommended for students
of all ability levels.
During this course, each student will be reflecting and growing in the following thinking strategies

Students develop their identities as confident,
engaged and motivated readers within their diverse communities.

Students develop the characteristics and practices of
proficient readers before, during and after reading in ELA and across the
curricula

about the World
Students will develop critical reading/literacy in
order to:
- develop deeper
understandings of a variety of text in order to express and substantiate
personal positions
- solve problems,
make decisions, resolve conflicts, and take action in their world
Routines:
Daily Reading: 20+ minutes of sustained silent reading
Mini Lesson: 20 minutes focused on a reading strategy
Achievements: 20 minutes student focus on their SMART goals
Monday - Math reading. Thinking like a mathematician.
Tuesday - Universal Reading Strategy
Wednesday - Science reading. Thinking like a scientist.
Thursday - Universal Reading Strategy
Friday - Social Science reading. thinking like a social scientist.
This blog will be a way that you can stay on top of your class work:
- It will help you reflect on classes that we have had.
- It will be a resource for you if you have to miss class for an important doctor's appointment or illness.
- It can be a place were you come to for a reminder.
- It will be a link to assignments.
- It will be a link to class discussions.
- It will be a way that you can have discussion about how you view an article, a video or a picture.
We will be sharing this blog space and in doing so, it is expected that we respect each other. When you are engage and share on this blog, please be sure to use respectful language and good digital etiquette.
